Trendy Topic: Is PR Dead?
Let’s cut to the chase: Is PR dying a slow death?
In short, no. The ever-increasing popularity of social media has the communications industry in a tizzy about the future of public relations, some going so far as to call the press release irrelevant. We say, relax. The buzz — fueled primarily by the misconception that public relations comprises nothing more than publicity — will simmer down as businesses and organizations learn to adapt to, embrace and leverage this not-so-new-but-still-trendy phenomenon.
In our humble opinion, the prevalence of social media forces public relations professionals to get back to the basics of their craft – building genuine, lasting relationships with those stakeholders who have the power to make or break your business. Online social networks simply serve as effective vehicles by which to engage in direct, two-way communication toward that end.
The death of PR? Hardly. PR on steroids? You bet.
